Goal III.A.
Students analyze, organize and describe various formats of information objects.
LIS 5566 Multicultural Literature for Children
Throughout this course, we explored children’s literature from many different cultures. Seeking out stories not just about different cultures, but by authors from those cultures. We would review and assess one book from each group, then create a recommended reading list of other books in that group. To do this, we would check other book lists, seeking out books recommended as award winners and/or strong representations of their respective categories. In the end, we compiled these into a multicultural toolkit of children's literature, ideal for assisting with exhibit creation and cultural programming in libraries.
Goal III.B.
Students identify and apply best practices in the use of different technologies for knowledge representation.
LIS 6711 Organization of Knowledge 1
In this course, we looked at how information is categorized, organized, adn systems we use to do this. For the main project in this course, my group and I looked at the acquisition of an Action Comics collection. We broke down the collection's elements for identification, categorization, and key data points to help users search the collection, as well as develop a thesaurus of terminology for searching and future collection expansion. You will also find a set of records breaking down key data from three issues of Action Comics.
LIS 6773 Digital Curation
We are moving further and further into a digital age. Think for a moment how much of your life is now kept on some form of digital device. How long will that file last? How can you preserve it longer? Digital Curation provided me with the skills and knowledge to better understand the challenges of collecting, preserving, and accessing digital information. From migration information off of obsolete systems to multimodal storage. We explored all the ways information specialists work to keep digital information accessible. For myself, I explored the challenges of video game preservation and the various ways different organizations are working to “save” games.
